Why this Website?

This year, I decided to give myself a gift: my own website.

I love writing, although writing has always been difficult for me. I wasted a great deal of ink on crossing over words. I wrinkled, torn and thrown a way a whole lot of paper. Doubts stole my sleep. Many notes I buried either in a drawer or on the computer hard drive. And yet, I love the suffering of writing.

In his novel “Rickshaw Boy”, the Chinese writer Lao She explained the life ambition of his hero to acquire his own rickshaw: “If he had his own rickshaw, rickshaw owners would stop bossing him around. And the endless arguments would disappear, too”. And I, with my own website, will finally be independent of exploiting publishers who take advantage of you, and editors with their caprices. I came across some righteous men among those, but they were few.

This website will involve all the issues that have always interested me, and occupied my time, first of foremost – the underdogs, all underdogs, regardless of sex, color, nationality, religion or ethnicity. I dislike paternalist notions such as “the weak” or “marginalized”. I loved it, when a colleague in “Haaretz” (Daily) told me once, on my return from a vacation, with sympathy or with irony – I don’t know: “All the miserable and the wretched missed you”.

Social issues and human rights, here in Israel and everywhere in the world, will keep troubling me, and I intend to trouble you too. I shall write about war, occupation and peace, conscientious objectors, detainees, labor immigrants, refugees, history, culture and cinema. From time to time, the website will play host to meaningful things others had to say.

Here too, I should aspire to apply the French journalist Albert Londres rule: “The  purpose of our job is not to please, nor to harm, but to put the pen into the wound. This wound, if we call it by its proper name, is indifference” (La traite des noirsTerre d'ébène, 1929). Not Indifferent was also the title of my column in the political weekly “ZoHaDerekh”.

I chose the website’s name from the long list of curses, or blessings, I was honored by: cosmopolitan, nihilist, traitor, fifth column, Don Quixote, misantrope,  naive

I look forward for your criticism and comments,

Thank you and see you on the site.
